Air Permit Amendment Application

Traditionally Howe Sound has burned bark and wood waste in its Power Boiler to generate steam.  In recent years the quality and availability of this fuel has declined as sawmilling on the coast of B.C. has declined so we have been seeking other sources of clean wood based fuels.  One of these fuels is the wood component of construction and demolition waste.  HSPP's air emissions permit authorizes specific fuels for use in our Power Boiler and the Minister of Environment has given HSPP temporary approval to use this fuel for a two year period.   During this period we will be assessing the impact of burning this fuel on air quality in neighboring communities.

HSPP has also applied to the Ministry of Environment to make authorization of this fuel permanent.  A notice to this effect was published in various newspapers serving our neighbouring communities.

On September 22 and 23 HSPP held two open houses about this application, the first in Gibsons and the second in Squamish.  View the brochure that was available during those meetings here:  Open House Brochure

The Coast Reporter has published three articles regarding HSPP's application.  Read what they have had to say here:   June 4   June 11  October 1

HSPP has been monitoring air quality at Langdale since 1996.  The concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM10), sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and reduced sulphur gases (TRS) are continuously measured at the monitoring site.  The  concentrations measured consistently meet B.C.'s guidelines for good air quality.

The current concentrations are shown on the B.C. Ministry of Environment's air quality website http://www.bcairquality.ca/readings/index.html

The monitors are calibrated daily and audit regularly by Ministry of Environment technicians to ensure that the quality of the data meets government's requirements.
