WATER - EFFLUENT SYSTEM |
|
The first stop in our effluent treatment process is the Primary Clarifier. The waste water will settle in this pond for approximately 6 hours, during which any solids will sink to the bottom and be raked out. From the Primary Clarifier, the effluent will go to the cooling tower (where you guessed it -- it is cooled!) before it enters the UNOX system. Inside the UNOX are millions of bacteria -- the same bacteria that are in any mud puddle. These bacteria eat the organic material out of the effluent, therefore reducing the amount of oxygen it will need to break down in the ocean. |

Finally, the effluent goes to one of two Secondary Clarifiers, where it will be held for the next 8 hours -- enough time to let the bacteria sink to the bottom and be collected. The bacteria will either be reintroduced into the UNOX or burned in the Power Boiler. The effluent is analyzed, a composite sample is collected, and then it is released into the ocean. |
