An important source of energy for our mill is hog fuel. This fuel is made up of sawmill wood waste and is primarily bark. Historically, this waste would have been pile burned or landfilled, but today it is burned in a state-of-the-art Power Boiler. The resulting heat is used to generate steam that will either drive one of our two turbo-generators or dry our products. The Power Boiler also burns dilute non condensable gases (DNCG) and it is a back up incineration point for concentrated non condensable gas (CNCG) which is usually burned in the Lime Kiln.
Most of our hog fuel comes to the mill by barge. A crane is used to scoop the bark out of the barge and into a conveyor system. The fuel is then stored in piles until it is needed in the power boiler. |
